In a new report from Coursera and Amazon Web Services, senior tech executives revealed they are prioritizing foundational cloud, data, and cybersecurity skills over the more hyped-up rush to implement AI.
First things first: The survey of over 750 leaders found AI skills ranked a distant fourth in importance, trailing far behind cloud, data, and cybersecurity. While 91% see AI as a key goal, an even greater number (95%) are focused on cloud transformation over the next three years.
The robot in the corner office: Executives are bracing for major workflow changes, with over half expecting 30-50% of their own tasks to be automated. This reality check has created a massive skills challenge, as 88% of leaders agree their AI investments will fail without a parallel investment in upskilling their current teams.
The mandate to upskill is clear, but the survey points to a source of internal friction. A majority of tech leaders (63%) believe their non-technical colleagues don't grasp the true cost and effort required to make AI work. The race to AI supremacy won't be won by the fastest adopters, but by the companies with the strongest technical foundations and the most well-trained teams to support the technology.
Elsewhere: The focus on talent echoes broader industry conversations, with Google Cloud’s HR head discussing the future of work, while other leaders emphasize why a human-centric approach is essential in today's environment.
